Colored pencils and markers for adult coloring books: what to use and how to blend
Which colored pencils and markers suit adult coloring books, how to blend colored pencils step by step, and whether markers bleed through the page.
For detailed adult coloring books, colored pencils are the most forgiving choice: they layer, blend and erase lightly. Markers give bold, even color but soak into book paper, so use them with a spare sheet behind the page. Gel pens and fineliners suit small details.
Colored pencils for adult coloring books
- Soft, wax- or oil-based artist pencils lay down rich color and blend well. Harder pencils hold a sharp point for fine detail. Many colorists use both.
- Range matters more than number. Look for a light, middle and dark shade of each main color, plus a white for blending.
- Keep them sharp. A sharp point gets into small spaces; a blunt side covers large areas softly.
How to blend colored pencils
- Start light. Lay the lightest shade over the whole area with gentle pressure and small circles.
- Build in layers. Add the middle shade where the shadow starts, then the dark shade only in the deepest shadow.
- Overlap the edges of each layer so there is no hard line between shades.
- Smooth it. Go over the area with a white pencil or a colorless blender pencil, pressing a little harder, to melt the layers together.
- Leave the paper white for the brightest highlights.
In a Nibfern book the light gray shading guide under each drawing shows where the shadows go, so you know where to add the darker layers. How to color with a gray shading guide.
Markers for adult coloring books
Alcohol-based markers give smooth, bold color and blend while wet, but they soak into book paper and often show on the back of the sheet. Water-based markers soak in less but can streak if you go over the same spot. Whichever you use, slip a spare sheet of paper behind the page you are coloring, or cut the page out first and color it flat on the table.
Do markers bleed through coloring books?
Alcohol markers usually do, on standard book paper. In a single-sided book the back of each drawing is blank, so no other drawing is spoiled on the same sheet, but the ink can reach the next page unless you protect it. What is a single-sided coloring book.
Gel pens and fineliners
Use gel pens for small bright details and highlights, and fineliners for crisp edges. Both suit book paper well.
