Mystery puzzle books for adults: how a 24-night mystery works
What a mystery puzzle book for adults is, how Nobody Leaves the Ice turns 24 logic puzzles into one case, how to solve the first night, and a free Night 1 to try.
Two thousand fish houses stand on a frozen Minnesota lake. The old warden who keeps them safe is found on the floor of his shack, and the county calls it an accident. His granddaughter has the 24 envelopes he left her and a register of 2,412 names. Open one envelope a night from December 1, solve the puzzle inside, cross out who it rules out, and by Christmas Eve one name is left. That is Nobody Leaves the Ice, a mystery puzzle book for adults.

A case you close yourself
If you love mystery novels or true-crime podcasts, this is the version where you do the detective work. The story gives you the case and the suspects; every puzzle you solve becomes evidence. Nobody tells you the answer at the end. You find it.
How a 24-night mystery works
- Read the night, then open the envelope. Each night has a page from his granddaughter's notebook and one of the warden's envelopes, with one puzzle inside.
- Solve the puzzle. The puzzles change from night to night: map puzzles, word ladders, logic grids, sum grids and picture puzzles.
- Complete the clue. The answer fills in one of the warden's clues.
- Cross out suspects. Each clue rules out names in the register of 2,412 permit holders.
- Finish on Christmas Eve. After the last night, one row is left, and that is the answer.
New to logic puzzles?
The first five nights are the shortest, about 10 to 20 minutes, and most later nights take 20 to 40. A ruler and a fine pen help with the register. Every puzzle has a single answer, and hints, answers and a register check are at the back, so a night that gets stuck never ends the case. It works well for two, too: one reads, one crosses out names.

The book at a glance
- A 124-page paperback, sold and shipped by Amazon, with gift options at checkout.
- 24 nights, one puzzle each: map puzzles, word ladders, logic grids, sum grids and picture puzzles.
- A register of 2,412 suspects to narrow down to one.
- A hint for every night, answers a week at a time, and the final solution sealed at the very back.
- A gift page at the front, ready to write in.
- Starting late? Each night carries its December date, and you can catch up by solving more than one in a sitting.
Giving it as a gift
For Advent, order it before December 1 so the first envelope can be opened on the first evening. As a birthday or any-time gift, it simply starts on Night 1 whenever they open it: the story is set in December, but the case works on any 24 evenings. Not sure it suits them? Print Night 1 free and try it together first. More ideas in advent calendar books for adults.
What is a mystery puzzle book?
A mystery puzzle book sits between a mystery novel and a puzzle book. Instead of reading to the end to find out who did it, you work it out: the story gives you the case and the suspects, and the puzzles give you the clues. Most use logic puzzles, so no outside knowledge is needed, only reasoning. For more free printables, see our free printable pages.
Solved the case?
If you have finished Nobody Leaves the Ice, please leave a rating or a short review on Amazon, without giving away the answer. It helps other mystery lovers find the case and decide whether it is for them.
Quick answers
What is a mystery puzzle book?
A mystery story you solve yourself: the story gives you the case and the suspects, and each puzzle you solve becomes a clue that rules suspects out until one is left.
How does Nobody Leaves the Ice work?
It has 24 nights, one for each night of Advent. Each night has a page from his granddaughter's notebook and one of the warden's envelopes with a puzzle; its answer completes a clue that rules out names in a register of 2,412 suspects, until one name is left on Christmas Eve.
How long does each night take?
About 10 to 20 minutes for the first nights and 20 to 40 minutes for the later ones.
What if I get stuck?
Hints, answers and a register check are at the back of the book, so you can get moving again without giving the night away.
Can I start after December 1?
Yes. Each night carries its December date, but you can catch up by solving more than one night in a sitting. It works just as well in January.
Is there a free sample?
Yes. Night 1 is free to print in US Letter and A4 from nibfern.com.
