Adult coloring books, drawn true to life
Nibfern is a new, independent publisher of adult coloring books; its first books came out in 2026. Each one has 45 realistic drawings, one per page, printed on one side so the back is blank, a light gray shading guide under every drawing, and a dotted cut line that trims a finished page to 7 x 9 inches for a standard 8 x 10 frame. Quiet Ocean and Quiet Winter are paperbacks on Amazon, the same drawings come as printable sets on Etsy, and four pages are free to print.

What makes a good adult coloring book
Five things decide whether an adult coloring book gets finished or ends up in a drawer.
- A subject you already love. A book on one theme, the sea, winter animals or flowers, keeps you coming back more than a mixed collection.
- One drawing per page, printed on one side. Nothing is printed on the back, so no drawing sits behind the one you are coloring and any page can come out. What a single-sided coloring book is.
- The right level of detail. Realistic drawings reward patience; bold and easy books suit short sessions. Choose the one that matches how you like to color.
- Help with shading. A light gray shading guide under the lines shows where light and shadow fall, so the finished page looks rounded rather than flat. How to color with a gray shading guide.
- Somewhere for the finished page to go. Nibfern pages trim along a dotted cut line to 7 x 9 inches and fit a standard 8 x 10 frame. How to frame a coloring page.
Types of adult coloring books
| Type | What it is | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Realistic | Animals, plants and objects drawn true to life, often with shading guides. | Colorists who want a finished page worth framing. |
| Mandala and pattern | Repeating geometric or floral designs. | Filling small areas with color without planning light and shadow. |
| Bold and easy | Thick outlines and large shapes. | Short sessions, beginners and markers. |
| Grayscale | Gray tones printed under or instead of outlines. | Learning shading; a light gray guide is the gentlest version. |
| Color by number | Numbered areas matched to a color key. | A set result without choosing colors. |
| Printable and digital | PDF pages you print at home, or layered files for apps like Procreate. | Coloring the same page more than once. Procreate coloring pages for adults. |
What to color with
Colored pencils are the most forgiving choice for detailed adult coloring books: they layer, blend and build shadow slowly. Gel pens and fineliners work for small details. Alcohol markers usually soak through book paper, so slip a spare sheet behind the page or cut it out first. Colored pencils and markers for adult coloring and how to blend colored pencils.
Every Nibfern drawing has a free color reference: the drawing colored in, with the colors to reach for shown as swatches.

Questions about adult coloring books
What is the best adult coloring book?
The best adult coloring book is one on a subject you already love, with one drawing per page and nothing printed on the back. If you like realistic subjects, Nibfern's Quiet Ocean and Quiet Winter each have 45 drawings drawn true to life, a light gray shading guide under every drawing, and pages that cut out to fit an 8 x 10 frame.
What are the most popular coloring books for adults?
Animals, flowers, mandalas and cozy scenes are the most popular themes. In US searches for coloring pages, owls, sunflowers and tulips are among the most searched subjects. Well-known names include Johanna Basford's Secret Garden and Kerby Rosanes's animal books, and realistic single-sided books are a growing choice for colorists who frame their pages.
What's best to use for adult coloring books?
Colored pencils suit most adult coloring books because they layer and blend. Gel pens and fineliners are good for small details. Alcohol markers usually soak through book paper, so use a spare sheet behind the page or a single-sided book.
Where's the best place to buy adult coloring books?
Amazon has the widest range, with gift options and delivery to another address. Nibfern's paperbacks are on Amazon, and printable sets of the same drawings are on Etsy.
Are there free adult coloring books?
Many publishers offer free sample pages. Nibfern offers four free printable pages, including a realistic Christmas tree and a polar bear, in US Letter and A4.
Are adult coloring books printed on one side?
Not always. Many print on both sides of the sheet. Every Nibfern coloring book is single-sided, so the back of each drawing is blank and any page can be cut out and framed.
